Katie's mixed media pieces focus on her childhood memories of the
landscape in her local area, in particular the Black Mountain in the
Brecon Beacons.
Katie produces mixed media
assemblages which include found objects and materials associated with the
landscape such as clay, plaster and stone, along with charcoal, chalk, ink
and paint. This technique incorporates the history of place and has resulted
in a series of work with a deep connection to the landscape
itself.
Working in Herbert’s Quarry on The Black
Mountain, she has created work with soil, stone, discarded
metals and industrial implements that have been left in
the landscape. Over the years these objects have been battered by harsh
weather, hidden away and slowly been reclaimed by nature itself, giving them a history of their own. The work is then placed back into the landscape and photographed.
Katie is based in Tairgwaith and is currently a post-graduate student at Trinity Saint David, Carmarthen, studying fine art. Her
work was included in Welsh Artist of the Year exhibition in 2012.
